"Queer High School" encapsulates an exploration of gender and sexual euphoria within the confines of a traditional heteronormative environment. Drawing upon personal experiences rooted in gendered traditions during youth, this collection challenges conventional gender roles, advocating for fluidity and individual expression. Inspired by the designer's rich heritage including Chinese, Sudanese, and Egyptian influences, the garments blend masculine elements with feminine aesthetics. Pieces like the tonia, which is made for men in Coptic Christianity is incorporated onto a feminine body. Other pieces like the sailor top are inspired by Leonard Cohen’s song Suzanne that pays homage to Christianity and the designer's experience within male-dominated environments.
Through various garments typically associated with men in unexpected, feminine contexts, this collection defies the constraints of prescribed gender norms. Each piece serves as a conduit for self-discovery and rebellion against the strictness of societal gendered expectations.
